Investigating wheat producersʹ reaction to government pricing policy: A cointegration application

The government protective policies on strategic products have been usually in favor of consumers. Meanwhile the public pricing policy affects farming patterns. The nominal protection rate (NPR) in an approach to evaluate the effects of these policies on production trends. In this study , a cointegration approach was applied to a sample of wheat producers in Iran to evaluate the government policy within the period of 1353-1377 (1974-1998). The fluctuated NPR revealed that the pricing policy have not been flexible enough to cover various conditions during the period of study. The calculated NBR also indicated that not only the producers have not been really protected but also they have been implicity taxed. Due to the applied approach , there are a positive long run relationship between wheat cultivation areas and NBR as well as between production growth and NBR.
