Effect of municipal compost in combination with chemical fertilizers and manure on growth and yield of wheat

A field experiment was conducted in Khorasan agricultural research center in order to investigate the effects of manure and municipal compost and their enrichment with chemical fertilizers on growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Hate cv. A complete randomized block design with four replications was used. Treatments consisted of: Control (Without fertilizer); Chemical fertilizers; Animal manure and Compost used separately and in combination with fertilizers. Results showed that compost alone did not increase grain yield. However, when enriched with different levels of chemical fertilizer, the highest amount of grain yield was produced. The yield was comparable to similar amount of manure. 40 ton/ha of manure alone produced significantly higher yield than did the same amount of compost. In regards to grain protein, significant differences were observed between different treatments, and the maximum protein was related to treatments enriched with chemical fertilizer. It seems that compost might be an appropriate substitute for manure and half of chemical fertilizer needed for soil.
