Qualitative and quantitative yield and sugarbeet seed vigor relationships

Seedling establishment ratio in the field is a function of emergence rate or in the other word, seed vigor , may effects yield of some plants, are harvested at vegetative growth stages. In case of sugarbeet crop,this effect is equal to 36OKg.ha-1 white sugar based on the several reports. Studies have shown that pre-plants washing of sugarbeet seeds for 6 hours with pure water,is resulted in promoting percentage and pace of emergence significantly. Therefore in order to determine the effect of seed vigor on yield of sugarbeet cv.9597, an split - plot design with 6 replicats, was conducted. In this expriment seeds that were treated with this method then had been dryed befor sowing , were compared to unwashed seeds as control , in three planting dates. To impose drought stress in germination stage,the interval between second and third irrigation was 1.5 times longer than conventional irrigation .Just after the third irrigation,seedlings of two rows from each plot were harvested and after counting, their dryweight were measured. At the end of growing period, root and white sugar yield were determined. Results showed that in all planting dates, treated seeds had significant superiority in the number and dryweight of established seedlings compared to control. It may be due to greater percentage and emergence rate of those seeds, so that these treated seedlings had greater opportunity for biomass accumulation. Root and white sugar yield produced from treated seeds had no significant diffrences with control. There was no significant intraction between seed treatment and planting date, but diffrences among planting dates were found to be significant.
