Effects of oil-extracted propolis on the performance of broiler chicks

An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of different levels of oil-extracted propolis on the performance of 360 broiler chicks (Arian).Six levels of propolis (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/kg ration) were tested in a completely randomized design.Feed intake, live weight gain and feed conversion ratio were measured for the production peroid of 37 days. The results indicated that the feed intake with the level of 250 mg propolis/kg ration in fourth and fifth weeks of production were 145.75 and 185.25 glchicklday respectively and the difference were statistically significant (p<0.05) with control (135.75 and 156 glchick/day).Total feed intake were also increased significantly (p<0.05) with the level of 250 mg propolis/kg ration.Maximum daily live weight gain were observed with the level of 250 mg propolis/kg ration and the difference with control were significant (p<0.05) on the first, second, fourth and fifth weeks of production period and the values were 26.71, 41.71, 74.86 and 92.85 g/chick/day respectively.The difference in total live weight gain between control and 250 mg propolis/kg ration were also significant (p<0.05).With the increase in the level of propolis, feed conversion ratio were significantly (p<0.05) reduced and its value between control and 250 mg propolis/kg ration on the first and second weeks of production period were decreased from 1.56 and 1.79 to 1.34 and 1.54 g rationlg weight gain respectively.Total feed conversion ratio were significantly (p<0.05) decreased with the increase in the level of propolis. The results of this experiment indicated that the consumption of propolis will promote the performance of broiler chicks and its usage is recommended in the diets.
