In this study seven cultivars and one line of spring safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were used for genetical evaluation of quantitative indices for drought resistance. Results showed that harmonic mean (BAR) had the most genotypic correlation with seed yield (0.98), and protein yield (0.99) under limited irrigation. Mean productivity (MP) had the most genetic correlation with seed yield (0.98), protein yield (0.99) and oil yield (0.91) under limited irrigation. Stress tolerance index (STL) had the most genetic correlation with oil yield under optimum irrigation. The highest beritability value was related to mean productivity, where as the least heritability valu was related to stress susceptibility index (SST). Stress tolerance index had the most genotypic coefficient of variance (%30.8), whereas harmonic mean had the least genetical coefficient of variance (%14.60). Stress tolerance index (STI) had the most phenotypic coefficient of variance (%54.6), whereas harmonic mean had the least phenotypic coefficient of variance (%24.4). Based on results, we may use stress tolerance, mean productivity, geometric mean productivity and harmonic mean, indices for selection under drought condition, based on breeding aims in spring safflower. Ln addition, we may use mean productivity to improve seed yield, protein yield and oil yield under optimum irrigation, and geometric mean productivity can he used to improve seed yield, protein yield and oil yield in a relative and contemporary way under optimum and limited irrigation. In addition , we may use harmonic mean to improve seed yield and protein yield under limited irrigation and stress tolerance index to improve oil yield tinder limited irrigation.
