Islamic manuscripts in the World

This article reviews quantitative situation of Islamic manuscripts, their holding places, language and catalogs at different places in the World. A review on library resources shows that more than one and half million volumes exist in 2723 libraries at 105 countries of the World. Among them, national libraries, with 15 percent, have a considerable part in preservation of these works. Most of the manuscript collections are located in 8 countries and more than 90 percent in 25 countries. Approximately half of these manuscripts are not separated and counted from languages point of view, but among those separated , 70 percent are Arabic. 18 percent Persian, and 10 percent Turkish. 3452 volumes of published catalogs describe these manuscripts, and 873 libraries need to prepare and publish their own catalogs.
