International standard serial number (ISSN)

International standard serial number (ISSN), is a certain and unique number which allocates to any periodicals and distinguishes it from other periodicals and serials. It is obvious that, this number facilitates distinguishing and purchasing activities and accelerates exchange, information dissemination, and marketing and is a step towards establishment of the bibliography of serials. This number is formed from eight digits that first seven digits are the unique number for serials and the eighth digit is for controlling purpose and with mathematical measurements determines the accuracy if the seven previous digits. This article discusses the organizational structure of the International Center for ISSN, its functions and aims, national ISSN centers, the benefits of its usage, the way to apply for it and how to use it, and the usage of this number in the libraries and information centers.
