Elements and Features Necessary for the Design and Evaluation of University Library Websites

The major aim of university libraries is to support a three-fold missions: educational, research and public services. This requires that the design of their websites should be based on the functions that support university missions. There are some problems and drawbacks, particularly in the theorerical approaches to the design of university websites. This is a report of a case study of 25 university websites from five countries (US, UK, Cadada, Australia , and Iran). The aim was to identiify elements and features that are important to the design of university library websites. A checklist based on the review of the literature and the observations of a number of websites by the researcher was developed to measure the extent to which the 25 websites had the desired elements and features. Findings showed that websites from the four foreign countries matched the ideal design with 78% and the Iranian library websites matched it with 45%. Also, the average points for the foriegn websites and the Iranian websites were 3/88 and 2.27 (out of 5) respectively. The checklist proved to be a valid instrument for both the design and evaluation of university library websites.
