General Systems Theory in library and information science

This paper describes the role and significance of General Systems Theory in the management of library operations and activities. Reviews the concept and purpose as well as different aspects of this theory. Describes the open systems, closed systems, tools and applications of GST. Some of the major characteristics of GST are association and relationship between elements of the system, holistic view, purpose fullness, input / output elements, processing, control of entropy, hierarchy, homeostasis, isomorphism, and equitinality. Describes also the significant influence of systems approach to library organization, development plans, and management.
