Background & Aims: Nowadays, oxidative stress and resultant free radicals is known as a major factor in diabetes pathogeny. In present study, the effect of ginger powder on nephropathy induced by diabetes, plasma antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation was investigated.
Materials & Methods: 18 male wistar rats with average body weight of 250 ± 20 gr were chosen. 16 rats were diabetized by STZ (60 mg/kg B.W, i.p). Rats were divided into 3 groups (n=8) of non-diabetic (ND), diabetic non-treated (DNT) and diabetic treated with ginger powder (D+G). Diabetic treated with ginger group received ginger at 5% of their consumed food during day/light period. After 8 weeks, all rats were anaesthetized by 10% hydrate chloral (0.5 cc/100 gr B.W, i.p) Blood sample was collected from heart of each rat. After opening of abdomen cavity, kidneys were removed and kept in 10% formalin buffer. Following doing centrifuge, plasma and red blood cells of blood samples were separated. Plasma antioxidant capacity by FRAP method and malondialdehyde of red blood cells membrane (MDA) as lipids peroxidation indicator were measured. After sectioning and staining process on renal samples, they were studied for focal cells proliferation and glomerules and tubules structural changes.
Results: MDA in non-diabetic, diabetic and diabetic treated with ginger rats was 126.4 ± 6.6, 254.26 ± 17.2 and 62.0480 ± 7.4 nmol/grHb, respectively. Significant attenuation of MDA in diabetic treated with ginger rats shows decrease of lipids peroxidation in comparism to the first two groups (p<0.01). Antioxidant capacity in mentioned three groups was 582.7 ± 23.33, 586.2 ± 23.79 and 763.5 ± 19.58 mmol/lit, respectively. Plasma antioxidant capacity in ginger treated rats showed significant augmentation comparing to the first two groups. In non-treated rats glomerules diffused proliferation, cells diffused inflammation and heparin changes were seen. Also arteries walls thickened. These changes in rats treated with ginger, showed sensible reduction.
Discussion: Results of this study showed that ginger powder causes decrease of lipids peroxidation increase of plasma antioxidant capacity and renal nephropathy reduction.
