Background & Aims: Stem cell factor (SCF), as one of the most important cytokines in blood has significant effects in pathogenesis of some diseases and carcinomas, and elevation in its soluble form has been defined in some diseases and cancers. To identify effects of SCF in pathogenesis and severity of bladder cancer, we measured the serum level of soluble stem cell factor in the bladder cancer patients before and after operation and compared its levels with serum SCF level in healthy controls. In addition, we tested serum SCF relationship with cancer stage and grade as well as with CBC parameters, included WBC and RBC count and etc.
Materials & Methods: The study group consisted of 35 bladder cancer patients and 35 healthy individuals. The after surgery samples were prepared 2-3 months after operation. Serum SCF was measured by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit.
Results: Serum SCF levels in bladder cancer patients were not significantly different from that in healthy controls (p=0.5). Furthermore, in bladder cancer cases the preoperative and postoperative serum SCF levels were not significantly different (p=0.889). In addition, serum SCF levels were not associated with pathological features, including cancer stage and grade, as well as with CBC parameters.
Discussion: We found that serum SCF levels in the bladder cancer patients were not significantly different from that in healthy controls and serum SCF levels were not associated with cancer stage and grade as well as CBC parameters, and SCF cannot be used as a remarkable predictor of bladder cancer recurrence and severity.
