The Analysis of Relationship Between Social Capital and Crime at Micro and Macro Levels

The concept of social capital, due to its nature and substance, is linked to almost entire issues and problems occupying the human and social realms, including the area of social pathology and to the crime in particular. Considering these interrelationships, the present research aims at examining the relationship between social capital and crime in an attempt to determining the nature of such a relationship. The study consists of two separate parts. Part one is a survey research conducted among 320 of ordinary people over the age of 18, in the city of Tehran, and convicts of Evin, Rajaei-shahr, and Varamin prisons. Part two was carried out at the international level and is presented as a secondary analysis convering a specific period (1997-1990). For data analysis, multi-variable regression, logistic regression and structural modeling equation have been used. The findings indicate that at both macro and micro levels there exists a negative and significant relationship between social capital and crime.
