Henri Desroches, the Sociologist of Religion

Thanks to his multi-faceted skill in many areas of inquiry-a clergyman, a worker, and a Marxist thinker-Henri Desroches (1914-1994), is a prolific writer whose valuable works place him firmly among the founding fathers of sociology of religion. Sociology of expectation and hope is attached to his name and he has contributed much to sociology of imagination. Three features characterize his works from those of others: his emphasis on multidiscilinarity of this area; his concern with movements, sects and small religious communities, hope and its manifestations in utopia; a belief in promised predestination and millennium cycles, as the pillar of his bibliography.
