Cardiac Manifestations in Fifty Two Systemic Lupus Erythematous Patients

The aim of this study was to investigate the cardiac manifestations in patients suffering from systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) and its correlation with renal involvement. Hematological and serological indices were also evaluated. Fifty-two patients with SLE criteria were studied. For statistical purposes, forty normal volunteers matched by age and sex, as "Control Group" was compared. Cardiac involvement was positive echocardiographically in 78.9% of patients, compared with 20% of control group, but symptomatic cardiac involvement was present in only 45% suggesting that in SLE, heart involvement is common but usually asymptomatic. There was no statistically significant correlation between sex, age and duration of disease, with cardiac involvement. Our data showed that cardiac auscultation and EKG are commonly normal in-patients with echocardiography-proved cardiac involvement. Antiphospholipid Ab, PT/PTT abnormalities, positive VDRL and thrombocytopenia showed no significant correlation, and so did for serum complement, anti DNA antibody and LE cell.
