Effect of Vitamin C on Urinary Excretion of Iron by Desferal in Major Beta Thalassemic Patients

I ron overload consequence of frequent transfusions is a serious life-threatening complication inpatient with major beta-thalassemia and major lifetime reducer and death in these patients. Desferal (Desferrioxamine) still is the most effective drug to increase the urinary excretion of Iron but there are not many papers about effective and helper drugs in Iron excretion in response to Desferal. In this study, the goal was to evaluate urinary iron excretion by ascorbic acid in Desferal users. We selected 50 patients (27 boyʹs and 23 girls, ranges ages between 2.5-17 years) with major beta thalassemia who suffered from iron overload and received Desferal by SC infusion. Two randomly urine samples were obtained from each patient (one after using Desferal alone and the other after using oral vitamin C and Desferal). Mean urine iron after using vitamin C and Desferal (231.7+196.03mcg/dl) was significantly higher by 21.3% than Desferal alone (182.4+224.6mcg/dl), (P-value =0.000). Use of Vit. C increases the Iron urinary excretion in Deferal users in major beta thalassemic patient.
