Hypernatremia in Newborns Admitted in Imam Reza Hospital 1998-99

Hypernatremia is an important electrolytic disorder in children especially in neonate. We crossectionally studied Hypernatremia in neonate in Imam Reza medical center out patient NICU, during one year from March 1997 to March 1998. In this study the incidence of Hypernatremia was 6.01 %. The most important etiologies were increase water loss due to hyperthermia 43.13%, traditional drug use for hyperbilirubinemia, 15.89% and low breast milk intake due to infections 11.35% and asphyxia 11.35%, but increase sodium intake was etiologic factor for just 4.45% patients. This study showed that the incidence of hypernatremia is high and the etiologic factors are different from other ages and the mortality is lower than older ages.
