THE ROLE OF BALLISTIC MISSILES IN THE IRANIAN DEFENSE DOCTRINE

This article examines the role of ballistic missiles in Iranʹs defense doctrine; the scenarios under which they may be used and predicts the impact of doctrine on the course of ballistic missile development there. This article argues that the emphasis Iranʹs defense doctrine places on conventional deterrence as well as asymmetric warfare have coupled with relative technological backwardness and financial constraints to drive Iran to pursue vigorously an indigenous ballistic missile program. It concludes that the efforts of the Iranian missile indusries will continue to concentrate on extending the range and accuracy of missiles while at the same time emphasizing the acquisition of the technology to build solid fuel engines.
