RIGHT TO DEVELOPMENT AND THE UNIVERSALITY OF HVMARI RIGHTS

In this article, the author argues that the right to development as one of the "third generation rights" poses a serious challenge to the notion of universal human rights. Human rights that are being advocated today are basically grounded in the liberal framework which focuses more on individual civil and political rights. one would expect that the democratic countries in the developed world woul welcome the adherence to and the implementation of the right to development which is based on human solidarity and collectivity. However, this paper will demonstrate that the discriminatory practices of liberal democratic countries in promoting human rights in its entirety is undermining the universal nature of human rights.
