WAS THE CONSTITUTIONAL REVOLUTION AN UNTIMELY AND TOO EARLY SOCIAL MOVEMENT FOR IRAN

This paper intends to examine the root causes of the Constitutional Revolution which occured in Iran at the beginning of the Twentieth century (1906). There has been a lot of debates amongst Iranian scholors as to why that Revolution failed to bring about meaningful political changes. The Constitutional movement was aiming to bring limitation of he monarchic powet, rule of law, social justice and political freedom. Instead of all that, Iran witnessed the rise of Reza Shah dictatorship which was far more repressive than the Qajar state. Amongst other reasons, one explanation which has been ofered by Iranian scholar ragues that the timing of that movement was too early for Iran. The iranian society was not as yet ready for such a socio political transformation. Hence, it failed to bring about the expected goals. This paper challenges this widely held view and offers a different explanation.
