An Evaluation of Periodontal Status among Diabetic Patients of Among Diabetic Research Centre

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate periodontal destruction among patients with types I & H diabetes mellitus compared with non-diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: Periodontal destruction was assessed in the following 3 groups: t) 24 type I diabetic subjects (IDDM, aged>12 yrs.), 2) 24 type II diabetic subjects (NIDDM, aged>40 yrs.), and 3) 10 non-diabetic patients of any age range. Clinical parameters included probing pocket depth, plaque index, Russle s Index as well as radiographic bone loss. Results & conclusion: Statistical analysis of findings demonstrated that variation in periodontal indices among the 3 groups was mainly due to variation in the age of subjects. Type I diabetic subjects had a greater score for Russleʹs Index as compared to the other 2 groups even after adjustment for age. Diabetes duration was in positive correlation with the degree of periodontal destruction regardless of the diabetes type. Furthermore, fasting blood glucose level had a positive but insignificant correlation with various periodontal indices.
