A comparison of the efficacy of double headed and single headed toothbrush using Bass method(Pesearch)

Gingivitis is refered to inflammation of gum and its main cause is dental plaque. Therefore plaque control has important role in prevention and treatment of gingivitis. Mechanical and chemical are two major methods of plaque control. Tooth brushing is the most common mechanical method of plaque control. Tooth brushes with different sizes and different thickness of bristles are made. Since single headed toothbrush are unable to remove the plaque from interproximal and lineangles of the tooth surfaces, double headed tooth brushes with curved bristles are designed. The aim of this research was to compare efficacy of single and double headed tooth brushes in plaque removal. 15 dental students were chossen and they and they were asked to brush their teeth by Bass method of tooth brushing. Then, subjects used single headed and double headed toothbrush for two ulternate weeks. Before each step, subjects were asked not to brush their teeth for 48 hours. plaque index was measured befor and after each step of tooth brushing with single and double headed toothbrush. Results showed that plaque removal was more efficent in palatal, lingual and interproximal surfaces using double headed toothbrush in comparision to single headed toothbrush. This difference was not observed in buccal surfaces.
