Evaluation of prevalence of gingivitis in students of 8-11 years of yazd in primary school in 1379 (Research)

Gingivitis, is the common form of gingival disease that is closely related to lack of oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to evaluated the prevalence of gingivitis and the oral hygiene status of primary school children in yazd. This survay was a descriptive and cross sectional study which had been perfromed among 405,8-11 years old school children chosen from, primary school in two educational districts in yazd by clustering random sampling. , periodontal status was assessed according to the criteria of gingival index (loe & sillness 1963) and the oral hygiene was evaluated by using simplified oral hygiene index (Greene & vermillion 1964). Prevalence of gingivtis was 100% among examind children the oral hygiene status has been evaluated moderate and the mean of OHS-S was 1.47-1-0.44. The girls had better oral hygiene and gingival status than boys,(P < 0.0003 and in general the oral hygiene has improved with age. This research showed a-direct relationship between oral hygiene and prevalence of gingivitis. According to our finding, there is a general ignorance to the oral hygiene among school age children. there fore systematic oral hygiene education program must be performed in Iranian schools.
