In order to investigate the gene actions and heritability of some of the quantitative characters of rice varieties, eight pure lines of rice ( IR28, 304, 305, Gila, Sangjo, Gharib, Domsiah, Domsefid ) were crossed in form of incomplete diallel mating system at Iranian Rice Research Institute, in 1996. All genotypes ( parents and F I s) were planted in a RCBD with 3 replications, during next crop season. The results of variance analysis indicated significant differences among studied genotypes. Because of the failure of the Hayman hypothesis, analysis of seed yield and 100-grain weight were not performed. Genetic analysis of grain per panicle, panicle length, stem length and days to %50 of flowering, indicated the greater role of additive gene actions than dominant gene actions . Further more, high narrowsense heritability of the aforesaid characters enables the breeder to use the selection methods in order to improve these characters. For other characters,i.e. flag leaf area and number of fertile tillers, role of dominant gene actions had more effects than additive gene actions. For these characters, selection strategy is ineffective and these characters only can be improved by producing hybrid varieties.
