In order to determine the proper phenological stage(s) (emergence, booting, heading and seed milk stage) for irrigating some spring barley genotypes (MB 76-17 and 1B 78-26403, two improved cultivars, as well as Gharamalek and Sefidan, two native populations) a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design with three replications was conducted at Khalatpooshan Agricultural Experiment Station, university of Tabriz, Iran in early 2001. Irrigation treatments were applied at the following arrangements of growth stages: 1- seedling emergence and booting, 2-seedling emergence, booting and heading, 3- Seedling emergence, booting and grain milk stage, and 4- seedling emergence, booting, heading and grain milk stage. Several traits including seed yield, biological yield, harvest index, straw yield, water use efficiency for seed yield, evapotranspiration efficiency and growing periods of the genotypes were evaluated. Analysis of variance of the data collected indicated that there were significant differences between irrigation treatment and barley traits studied. It was also revealed that genotypes were only different significantly as to biological yield, harvest index and growing period, while genotype x irrigation interactions were not significant. Mean comparisons of traits also indicated that irrigation of barley at heading was more effective than that at grain milk stage.
