Introduction: Foreign body aspiration is a common and some times life threatening condition that may be misdiagnosed when the patient has no symptom or there is no radio logic findings.
Material and methods: In this study 151 patients suspected to have foreign body aspiration were evaluated according to age, sex, type and site of the foreign body, the time between the aspiration and referral to the hospital, radio logic findings, endoscopic findings and complications. The relation between these factors and the complications were analyzed using x2 test.
Results: Male/Female ratio was 1.7. 78.1% of the patients had less than 5 years of age, 10% were between 5-10 years and 11.9% had more than 10 years. 25.2% of the patients referred to the hospital in less than I day, 46.3% in 1-7 days and 28.5% after 7 days. the most common symptom was cough and the most common sign was decreased breathing sounds and wheezing. 62% of the patients had negative chest X ray that in 64.8% of these, foreign body was found during broncos copy. The most common endoscopic finding was presence of foreign body and the most common site was right main bronchus.
Discussion: 42 patients developed complication following aspiration or surgical manipulation. no relation was found between age, sex, the time between aspiration and referring lo the hospital but the rate of complications was more in patients with foreign bodies in the right main bronchus.
Conclusion: Foreign body aspiration should be suspected in all patients with respiratory symptoms especially in children with pneumonia that do not respond to medical therapy and a care full history taking and complete physical examination is more informative than radio logic findings.
