Management and treatment of tracheal stenosis due to thyroid tumors and twelve reported operated cases

Trachea of the single respiratory tract is of vital importance. Trachea injuries due to unnecessary handling and inaccurate management may have irreversible outcome. Of the various conditions which could make tracheal stenosis, in this article we studied benign and malignant thyroid disease. From two university medical centers, over the past seven years, 94 patients had tracheal stenosis. Twelve cases resulted from thyroid disease, 6 cases were retrosternal or substernal thyroid, one case was Hashimoto thyroiditis, and 5 cases were invasive thyroid cancer. We advise surgeons who manage these patients to diagnose thyroid lesion early with accurate treatment. We have had good results with thyroid removal, thyroidectomy with tracheal resction, and end-to-end anastomosis and PLO.
