Ilmenitee is one of the most important mineral of titanium. Upgrading ilmenite by increasing theTiO2 content and production of "synthetic rutile" is performed by various methods such as smelting reduction in electric arc furnace or rotary reduction kiln selective chlorination and selective leaching. Synthetic rutile is used for white pigment production titanium tetra chloride (feed stock of titanium production) and welding rod coatinqs.ESCMʹprocess (developed on ESR2 basis) is recently used for upgrading ilmenite concentrate.
In this research ilmenite concentrate of kahnouj mine was upgraded via smelting reduction method in Electra Slag Crucible Melting (ESCM) furnace. Petroleum coke for reduction of Iron oxides and mixture of Care CaO and A1203 as ESCM slag were used. Effect of reduction time on iron recovery TiO2 and FeO content of slag were considered. Results showed that increasing the reduction time from. To 23minutes, caused the amount of 1102 content in slag and iron recovery increase and reach 66% wt and 76% wt respectively. Also it was shown that the FeO content of slag decreased during the reduction. X-ray studies of slag showed that the high viscosity of slag was formed because of titanium sub-oxides(Ti305 and T1203) formation.
