Dialectological Terminology in Makhzan AI-Adviyeh(scholarly-research)

Makhzan Al-Adviyeh is a significant pharmaceutical book written by Mohammad Hossein Aghili Alavi Khorasani Shirazi in 1185(A,H.). This work which includes over 6000 medical and pharmaceutical terms, resembles a comprehensive dictionary in that, besides specialized and comprehensive information regarding medicine, the writer includes linguistic, etymological, and dialectological data. This study shows that over 350 of these terms belong to regional dialects from all over old Iran. The writer, one may speculate, must have indirectly and sporadically pinpointed to these terms while giving synonyms and equivalents for medical terms. Hence, this essay elaborates on dialectological terminology of the book. All these terms have first been classified according to their localities and then an alphabetical list of them together with their equivalents has been prepared. In most cases, these have been compared against Tohfa-al-Hakim and Borhan-e-Ghateʹ to record their similarities and/or differences.
