Translation and Idioms:A Case Study of the University Students Translations before and After Translation Courses

Translation has always been a matter of discussion in teaching and learning a second/foreign language. Idiomatic expressions encompass an integral part of language whose appropriate translation is a delicate task calling not only for intuition and talent but also for awareness of some theoretical basis. The present study deals with the translation of idiomatic expressions from English into Persian focusing on the procedures and problems involved. The question addressed in this study is whether the university students follow theoretical consideration and the suggested procedures or not. In this regard, first, theoretical basis for translating idioms was discussed and the procedures that could be adopted for rendering idioms were mentioned. Then the research procedure was explained. The data was elicited from two groups of English major students in Esfahan University. Thirty sentences including common English idiomatic expressions were presented to each group for translation into Persian. The findings showed that a high percentage of students were unaware of most common English idioms. Those who had recognized idioms from non-idiomatic expressions did not seem to appreciate the considerable achievements of translation theory in practice. The comparison of the two groups showed that the performance of the subjects who had passed translation courses was better than those who had not.
