A Glance at Avicennaʹs Life and Mystical Thoughts

This article introduces Avicenna as the most prominent philosopher both in Iran and in the Islamic world. Focusing on his biographical work, Kitab al-isharat wa at-tanbihat ("Book of Directives and Remarks"), which he wrote late in his life, the author. argues that Avicenna shows tendencies towards a kind of mysticism which may be called his eastern philosophy. The writer, then, contends that the origin of Sohrvardiʹs transcendental philosophy that appeared a century and a half later is traceable back to Isharat and other pieces that Avicenna wrote in his life span.
