Formulation and Optimization of Suitable Coatings on ABS Plastics

The choice of suitable coatings based on Nitrocellulsoe with suitable properties such as adhesion, scratch resistance and hardness for ABS plastics are of special importance. In this research work, surface preparation cif ABS was carried out using solvent and oxidation methods. Isopropyl alcohol was used as solvent and sulphochromic acid was used for oxidation method. The choice of coatings with suitable adhesion and hardness based on different percentages of nitrocellulose with short alkyd resins were tested. The results show that a 50/50 mixture of nitrocellulose with alkyd resins provides the best adhesion, gloss and hardness properties for these coatings.
