THE NECESSITY OF DESIGNING URBAN SPACES ADJOINING METRO ENTRANCES OF TEHRAN

Nowadays, intra urban transportation means had been affected urban fabric ofcities in different ways and had influences on their image, physical form and social strut- ture. In recent years, the establishment of Tehran underground transportation network has had powerful and sensible effects on the physical and social order of the city, the most important of which are being observed in the metro entrances that are the intersection of underground transportation network and city surface. metro entrances create the most important links between new transportation system and existing structure. They also have close rela-tionship not only with streets and existing urban fabric, but also with the underground transportation system. In this regard, their design should be done carefully and clearly considering the necessity to attract people, to prepare safety requirements, to define the boundaries, to control congestion and to create legibility and clearance in the city. It is a short time that underground transporta- tion network is established in Tehran, but it is necessary to study its position -among other transportation means- as a special mean for moving passengers. Regarding the special physical structures which are needed for this transportation mean (stations, underground networks and entrances) it is necessary to study the changes which it caused in the city and urban qualities, on the basis of its con nection with the existing footpaths and streets Legibility and clearance of entrances together with aesthetic aspects and safety require ments in the urban environments, as a research subject, can lead to the suggestion of creative solutions and making unique character for metro entrances of Tehran. O n the other hand, designing the underground entrances without considering the defined rules and specifications (which has been determined by Tehran Municipality Beautification Organization) will cause visual chaos in the city. In this paper, it is attempted to interpret the necessity to design townscape and facilities in the metro entrances to define boundaries, as an introduction to determine criteria and specifications.
