Collocations in Persian Language

This study reports the findings of an investigation on collocation in four different prose types -- fictional, journalistic, scientific, and educational -- in Persian texts. First, collocations in the above mentioned prose types are extracted and analyzed for dominant patterns and structures. Based on Newmarkʹs (1998) framework, the extracted collocations are, then, classified into syntagmatic and paradigmatic categories. In syntagmatic category, the dominant structures are identified using frequency and percentage as well as statistical test of chi-square to determine the significance of dominant patterns. In paradigmatic category, collocations are subdivided according to concepts such as body parts,. color, time, food, numbers, etc. The report also identifies the most frequent types of collocations in this category.
