Study of the Effects of Phenytoin on the Fervor Bones of Rat

Phenytoin is one of the most effective drugs which is used in the treatment of epilepsy. Long-term consumption of phenytoin, on the other hand, causes a reduction in blood calcium. Therefore, we decided to study its effects an the bones of rat. Six groups of N. MAR! rats were selected and treated with different doses of phenytoin. After 41 days. blood samples were taken, and levels of blood calcium, phosphorus and ALP activity were measured. Then, long bones were cleaned , and the length and diameter of right femours were measured. Finally, a histopathological study was completed. The findings indicated that calcium and phosphorus levels decreased; whereas, ALP activity increased. Partial increase in the diameter and partial decrease in the length of bones were observed; however, the variations were not significant in comparison with the control group. Results of histopathology, also revealed that bone ostoids became thinner and the osteoclasts were of more activity in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, phenytoin treatment seems to cause osteomalasia and more fraction in bones.
