Background & Aim: Since anterior permanent teeth are effective in mastication, Speaking and esthetic, this study investigated types of crown fractures in children between ages 7-12, referring to pediatric ward of faculty of dentistry (Tehran Medical Science University) between 1999-2002.
Method & Material: This study was done retrospectively on 396 children who came to pediatric ward of faculty of dentistry (Tehran Medical Science University) because of crown fracture in their permanent incisors. The type of fracture was determined based on Ellis categorization which was reviewed in 1970.
Results: The average age of children was between 9.82 (1.26 years, and 88.5% of crown fractures were seen in maxillary central incisors. The most common cause was falling down (45.5%) and the majority of incidents happened in the street (36.9%). Most of fractures were in grade 3 (52.5%) and there was not a significant relationship between developmental lesions, lip incompetency and the rate of overjet with the grade of fracture. However, the prevalence of grade I fracture with openbite was significantly more than normal or increased overbite (P<0.01).
Conclusion: It is recommended that dento-alveolar anomalies and structural abnormalities of the teeth go under treatment and special care should be done before the fractures happen. In addition, children which are at high risk of tooth fracture, should use mouth guards to prevent these fractures.
