Mechanical alloying (MA) is a solid-state powder processing technique involving repeated cold welding and fracturing of powder particles in a high-energy ball mill. MA has been proved to accelerate the kinetics of chemical reactions and solid-state phase transformations making it possible to synthesis a large variety of equilibrium and non-equilibrium structures at room temperature. MA offers a simple processing route of materials with large quantities and at relatively low-cost. Additionally materials production can take place at room temperature which can have advantages over high temperature synthesis. The final product has a very fine microstructure with high uniformity which can improve the mechanical and physical properties. Nowadays MA as a non-equilibrium process is receiving considerable attention in the research and development community to produce novel materials with unique structures.
