THE EFFECT OF THERAPEUTIC TOUCH ON VITAL FUNCTION IN CHILDREN

For children , illness and hospitalization constitute a stressful) experience . One method of stress reduction is non verbal communication such as Touch . We have examined the effects of therapeutic touch on the vital functions of children who were hospitalized at Afshar hospital of Yazd. This study was a clinical trial and samples were 32 toddlers who were hospitalized in this hospital . Data was collected via a questionnaire about demographic information and an observational checklist. Stress was defined by measuring pulse rate , respiratory rate , systolic pressure , axillary temperature and behavioural state . The data was collected 5 minutes before and after therapeutic touch . The results demonstrated that use of therapeutic touch as a means of stress reduction decreased the pulse rate , respiratory rate and systolic pressure (P value < 0.001 ) and had a positive effect on the behavioural state.( P value < 0.001 ) .But the results did not show any significant effect of therapeutic touch on axillary temperature.
