THE USE OF WIND TO PRODUCE ENERGY IN KURDESTAN PROVINCE

Productivity of oil and gas and their high cost benefit in matters other than combustion, in one hand and their problem of environmental pollution when they are burnt, on the other hand have attracted the decision makers in Iran to consider the wind energy as a good alternative for energy resources. It is especially important because of the existence of regions with high potential for wind energy in Iran. The Kurdestan province is one of the windy places in Iran that has not been considered for wind energy yet. In this paper, the general characteristics of the different kinds of winds which are blown throughout the year in Kurdestan province are considered firstly. Then by using the information from the stations in the six major cities in the province, the wind characteristics including power, direction, intensity and probability at different months of the year, are considered. The statistical studies show that Bijar, Zarine Obatoo, Ghorver, Sanandaj and Marivan have the most wind energy potential, and Bijar and Ghorve are the best places to install the wind turbine. For all of the above regions, the maximum of the wind average speed and power are obtained in March, April, May and June, and the minimum of the average wind speed occurs in December. Bijar, Ghorve and Zarine Obatoo have high average wind speed and it is recommended to search for best places in these regions for the wind turbine sites.
