TO EVALUATE THE PARAMETERS, EFFECTIVE IN THE ACID ACTIVATION OF AN IRANIAN BENTONITE

The effect of parameters such as, the acid concentration, time, and solution to solid ratio (V/W) on the acid activation of an Iranian bentonite, with sulfuric acid, has been investigated. The amount of the cations removed from the bentonite, as a result of the acid treatment, was considered as an initial criterion for the extent of the activation. It was observed that the cations removal would increase with the acid concentration up to rN, after which it remained almost constant, with the exchangeable cations, Ca and Na dissolving much more and easier as compared to the other cations. However, at the acid concentrations higher than ON, the cations, especially those of octahedral layer, underwent further dissolution. The activity of the acid treated bentonites was tested by measuring the bleaching percentage of edible oil. These results showed a similar behavior to that of the cations removal up to a N acid concentration, however, at the higher concentrations the bleaching capacity decreased. The time of r hours and the solution to solid ratio of rwere found appropriate for the activation process.
