Assessment of Obsessive Compulsive Symptoms in Schizophrenic Patients in Kerman

Background: Schizophrenia (Sch) is a clinical syndrome with involvement of thought -perception - emotion and behavior. Psychiatric researchers have always been interested in finding the relationship between Sch and other psychiatric disorders such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of this study was to identify obsessive compulsive symptoms in schizophrenic patients and their relationship with negative and positive symptoms of Sch referring to Dr. Beheshti hospital in 2003. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 80 Schizophrenic patients selected by continuous sampling. Existence of obsessive compulsive was determined with the help of Y-BOCS criteria in 5 ranges (very severe -severe - moderate - mild and subclinical). Prevalence of obsessive compulsive was determined in the sample and its rate was estimated by 95% probability in the community and association of age and sex with obsessive compulsive was calculated. Results: The subjects were 80 people (68 men and 12 women) at the mean age of 36.2±10.5. Eighty point eight percent of the subjects had obsessive compulsive while noone had severe obsessive compulsive. Five percent had severe, 12.5% moderate and 1.3% mild obsessive compulsive. There was no relationship between sex and obsession. However, in schizophrenic people under 30, obsessive compulsive was more frequent than over 30 year-olds (P= 0.05). Conclusion: Prevalence of obsessive compulsive among schezophrenic patients was at normal range of community.
