The Prevalence of Depression in Thalassemic Patients in the City of Sari

Objectives: Considering the high prevalence of Thalassemia in Mazandaran province, this study evaluated the relationship between depression and major thalassemia. Method: An anterograde cohort study was conducted on all thalassemic patients (86 girls and 79 boys) between the ages of 9 and 16 years old referred to Booali Sina Thalassemia Clinic.They were assessed by Children Depression Scale (CDs). Findings: Level of depression was higher in thalassemic patients (14%) than in the control group (5.5%), even though the average score of depression in females of control group was higher than the thalassemia females. Results: The prevalence of depression is remarkable in thalassemic patients.
