EFFECTS OF CPB ON PLATELETS

Introduction: The most common cause of bleeding after cardiac surgery is dilutional thrombocyatopenia and platelet dysfunction due to CPB (Cardio pulmonary Bypass ) effect. This study is simple random sampling on Patientʹs that candidate for CABG and attempted to show changes of platelet count during CPB . Methods: 51 patientʹs were evaluated in this study during 2 months. Platelet counts was done before induction of Anesthesia and 15,30,45 minutes after initiation of CPB and after arrival to CVS ICU. Results : 32 (62.7%) patients were men and 19 (37.3%) were women. Mean age was 56.11 ± 12 with range (20-82) years old. Mean pump time was 52.29 ±. 11 with range (30-85) minute. Mean platelet counts before induction of anesthesia and 15,30,45 after Initiation of CPB and arrival to ICU were 228.86 * 10^3, 118.31 *10^3,131.96 * 103,140.88*10^3,and 156.94 * 10^3, respectively. Conclusion : Platelet counts decrease (luring first 15 minutes of CPB and then increase, but platelet count after CPB significantly lower than before operation . There is a significantly positive correlation between degree of thrombocyatopenia and duration of CPB and hypothermia.
