REDUCTION OF COLONIZATION OF ENTEROTOXIC ESCHERCHIACOLI BY LACTOBACILLUS CASEIIN INTESTINAL TRACT OF MICE

Introduction: Lactobacillus easel is one of those non-pathogenic organisms present in fermented foods and dairy products consumed by humans, while Enterotoxigenic Esherichia coil (ETEC) is one of the most important frequent causes of travelerʹs diarrhea causing severe complications in young children. The purpose of this study was to use Lactobacillus casei as a probiotic organism for reducing the colonization of ETEC in mouse intestinal tract. Methods: Four weeks old mice were divided to 3 groups; two test and one control. The test groups were fed with probiotic organisms for 6(group I) and 3(group 2) clays while the controls were not fed with any probiotics. 72 hours after the last oral feed with probiotics, all 3 groups were fed with ETECs. The number of ETECs shed through feces that was determined at different times was assumed to be the rate of colonization of pathogenic bacteria. Results: Both test groups had a significant reduction in the rate of colonization of ETECs (P=0.001) as compared to the control group. Coiuparsion of two test groups showed that consumption of probiotics for longer period results in more reduction of pathogenic bacterial colonization in mice intestinal tract. Conclusion: With respect to the obtained results, one can suggest the use of lactobactillus casei as a probiotic organism for protecting mice from diarrhea caused by ETECs.
