THE EFFECT OF STRIPPING OF MEMBRANES ON PREVENTION OF POST TERM PREGNANCIES

Through a randomized controlled trial on 212 pregnant women with 39-41 weeks of gestational age, the effect of stripping of membranes on prevention of post term pregnancy was studied. Stripping of membranes was done in case group (1 12 women) and Bishop score (B.S) was determined in them. The control group comprised of 100 women . The mean gestational age was similar in both groups (274±3.1 days in case and 273±4.2 days in control group). On the first examination, there was no significant statistical difference between of the two B.S groups. After first examination, the rate of delivery was 46.6% in case and 7% in control group. (RP=6.63 95% C1:3.69 11.9(p<0.001). On the second examination, there was a statistically significant difference between B.S of the two groups. The probability of B.S>6 in case group was 2.4 times more than the control group (RR=2.4 95%Cl: .6-3.7, p=0.001). The mean period between first examination and start of active labour was shorter in case group (p<0.001 ) (ʹ3.203.1 days versus 6.7±3.6days).ln 5 (4.5%) women, delivery was induced . (RR:0.25 95% CI: 0.15-0.4 p=0.0004). The percentage of premature rupture of membranes, meconial color of fluid and decreased fetal movement was more in the control group (p<0.05).
