A sports drink refers to a beverage that is formulated for quick replacement of fluids and electrolytes lost during exercise. The fluid content of sports drinks helps to maintain proper hydration while the carbohydrates included in the formulas provides energy. Sport drinks have added flavor and contain electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. The added flavor which isnʹt present in plain water may help to increase consumption of the fluid and thus preventing dehydration. Sports drinks are rapidly emptied from the stomach and absorbed through the small intestine. Solutions of 6-8% carbohydrate do not interfere with rehydration goals. In general sport drinks can contain different ingredients such as water, electrolytes, carbohydrate, protein, colour, flavour and etc. There are three main types of sport drinks in the market which are called Isotonic, Hypotonic and Hypertonic. Each one has a individual formulation in order to meet the nutritional demands of athletes although the nutritional demands of various athletic activities can be different depending on the type of activity, the duration of the activity, and the intensity at which the activity is performed. Although ʹenergy drinksʹ and ʹsports drinksʹ are very different, there is much confusion over the two mentioned terms with many people using them interchangeably. ʹEnergy drinksʹ are marketed for their mental stimulant effect; basically they are soft drinks that contain high levels of substances, such as caffeine, taurine, and glucuronolactone. Sports drinks, on the other hand, do not have a stimulant effect, and although some contain caffeine, the levels used are not high.
