Introdnctlon
Human relationships have a high priority in all peopleʹs activities. but
this is not the same in every held. In educational settings such as
universities and classrooms human relationship is a process of creation,
maintenance and development of dynamic and reciprocal relations among
members of a social system. This relation is based on meeting different
needs of individuals and groups, as well as on mutual usefulness.
Characteristics of faculty members of universities and higher education
institutions are discussed in teaching books. In this paper important
elements of teaching in human relationships have been discussed. But other
dimensions of teaching such as lesson presentation, classroom management
and evaluating of studentʹs academic performance have not been discussed.
Purthcrrnore, the characteristics of faculty members with respect to human
relationships from Islamic point of view have been studied. In Islamic
educational books such as "Manners of education in Islam", most important
features of human relationships and their effects on teaching have been
mentioned. The important qualities of faculty members in human
relationships are:
• courtesy
• moderateness and coolness • kindness with students
• justice and fairness
• avoidance of reminding someone of a favor done to him or her, and
• consultation with students.
Research Questions
The purpose of this paper in the first step is determining human
relationships indicators In teaching and then, determining how much these
indicators are accomplished in performance of faculty members of Esfahan
University. The questions of this research are:
• What are points of view of exemplar faculties from Hsfahun
University, Esfahan University of Technology and Esfahan Medical Science
University about effective human relationships indicators in teaching"
• How much do faculty members of Esfahan University pay attention
to human relationships with regards to indicatorsʹ!
Methods
In this study both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. In thc
qualitative part, national exemplar faculty members were interviewed and in
the quantitative section, the performance of Lsfahan University facuity
members was evaluated. Statistical population include national exemplar
faculty members from Esfahan University, Esfahan University of
Technology and Esfahan Medical Science University. The other statistical
population include faculty members of Esfahan University. In order to
choose national exemplar faculty members sampling was not done (hecause
of the small population n=20) and 15 of them were interviewed. To select
faculty memhers of Esfahan University, stratified sampling method was
used, In order to evaluate the perfonnancc of the selected faculty members
in the quantitative part, 1245 third and fourth grade undergraduate students
took part in the research.
Results
Findings of the research indicated that national exemplar faculty
members emphasized on the role and importance of human relationships in
university teaching: avoiding an instrumental view and having a humanistic
view toward students; extending student-teacher relationships; and payingattention to students with academic weaknesses, The mean that was
measured in the quantitative section was 3,96 and it was more than the mean
of effectiveness criterion (3.5). In this domain the observed differences
among the performances of the faculty members with rcgard to thei r
departments. degree and record service were not significant.
Discussion and Conclusion
National exemplar faculties from Esfahan University. Esfahan
University of Technology and Esfahan Medical Science lJniversity have
emphasized on the high priority of human relationships in quality of
teaching, With regard to findings of this research we can say that the
performance of faculty members in domain of human relationships is
positive and acceptable, In spite of the important role of human
relationships in teaching, this dimension has been rarely neglected in
researches conducted on teaching, So with regard to the significant impact
of human relationships on the effectiveness of teaching in higher education
it is necessary that this important aspect of teaching bc considered by future
researchers,
