Introduction
One way of saving languages and dialects is to have them recorded
scientifically. In this paper the phonological system of Kurdehi dialect is
analyzed. First the phonemes. the allophones. the syllabic structure and
phonological processes are introduced; then the supra-segmental features of
the dialect arc discussed.
Method
Two methods of library research and field work have been men for this
study. In order to analyze the data. the researcher made a transcript of the
recorded data; then minimal pairs were extracted from the notecards, tapes
and intuition of the researcher. The framework used for sound analysis is
data-driven and descriptive.
Discussion and Conclusion
In every language there are sounds which may not be found in other
languages; however. the collection or variety of sounds in different
languages are limited. That is. there are a limited number of sounds used by
all languages which are called verbal sounds (Yarmoharnmadi. 1364). Tbese
sounds consist of consonants and vowels which are explained in detail in
tables 1,2 and 3.
Allophones are also found in this dialect in the following order:
Aspiration. obstruction. labialization, palatalization, vclarization.
nasalization, continuancy, constriction, alveolarization. Table 4 shows the
allophones of this dialect and their characteristics. Syllables in this dialect are not different from the standard dialect. That
is, vowels are the peak of the syllable; thus there are three types of syllable
in this dialect (Haqshenas, 1380):
a. Short syllable (CY) consisting of a beginning consonant, a vowel
and two final consonants.
b. Medial syllable (eYe) consisting of one primary consonant, one
vowel and one final consonant
c. Long syllable (CYCC) consisting of one primary consonant, one
vowel and two final consonants
Units of sound go through changes due to collocation. These changes
may delete a sound, replace it with another sound or change some of its
features. The major processes in this dialect are: assimilation, dissimilation,
segment insertion, deletion, transfer and permutation.
One of the factors in the analysis of phoneme is the layers of usage. The
rules of phonetics are common, analogical and idiosyncratic, that is, sound
changes happen in every words. If in Kurdehi Dialect under a certain sound
condition, the Iql (J) of the standard Persian changes into [k], this is a
common idiosyncratic rule. So if in a word like Qurʹan this rule is not
followed it is because the word Quran is only used in the cultural layer not
in the vulgar or native layers. The most important suprasegmental units
discussed in this paper arc stress and imonation.
