Culture free or culture fair? A pilot study on Self-Esteem Inventory among Iraninan children

With the aim of stand ardi sing the Culture Free Se lf Esteem Invent ory (CF SE I - Form A) a stud y in two phases - the pi lot and a lin al - was conducted in Iran . In the pilot study 199 children (age 6- 13 years) were examined. The Coo persmith Self- Esteem Inventory was used for measurin g concurrent va lidity of CFSE I. Moreover, in the pilot study, reli ability ove r tim e for the Scale was mea sured . The result s showed acceptable reli ability and validity of the Scale among Iranian children. Some item s of the Inventory were modi lied or revi sed based on the Charac teristics of Irani an culture. According to the result s of factor analys is, which was carried out in the final study among 1300 children, this Sca le can measure fact ors of self esteem among the Iranian populati on although it is not able to mea sure them in the Canadian popul ation. Conside ring findin gs of the study and the modifications made to CFSEI, this invent ory is culture fair rather than culture free .
