The short effects of ketoprofen on oestrous cycle and liver and kidney function in dairy cows.

Five pluriparous milking cows with known reproductive history were used in the present study. These cows were first used as the control group and then after an oestrous cycle rested as the treatment group. The oestrous cycle of all cows was synchronized with 2 injections of PGF2a (D-cloprostenol, 0.15 mg/cow, IM). The second dose of PGF2a was injected after confirmation of the presence of a mature corpus luteum on the ovaries. Blood and urine samples were collected prior to the second dose of PGF2a to determine liver and kidney functions. Six hours after the second injection of PGF2a, saline solution (0.9%. 5cc, IM) in the control group and ketoprofen (3mg/kg, IM) in treatment group was administered daily for 4 days. Oestrus detection (4 times a day) was carried out 24 hours after the second dose of PGF2a. Blood samples were collected to evaluate liver and kidney function daily till ovulation and urine samples every 48 hours. Liver and kidney function was evaluated in the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th days of the next cycle. Liver function was evaluated by measurement of serum total protein, cholesterol, AST, GGT and arginase. Also, kidney function was evaluated by measurement of serum ereatinine, BUN, urine creatinine and physical and semi quantitative urinalysis. Evaluation of liver and kidney function by the selected tests did not show significant changes due to renal and hepatic injury or insufficiency. These results demonstrate that administration of ketoprofen in dairy cows at the used dose did not alter liver and kidney function, but can affect oestrous cycle.
