Introduction: Cancer of cervix is a frequent cancer in women genital tract. This cancer has a long privative state. Pap smear is a cheap, fast and cost-effective test is diagnosing pre-malignant changes of Cervix. Diagnosis and treatment of privative lesions are essential for prevention of progression of disease to invasive cancer. HPV is one of known risk factors of cancer of cervix and privative lesions. The most commonly made abnormal diagnosis Papanicolau test is atypical Squamous Cells with Undetermined Significance (ASCUS) that its significance in cervical cancer is unknown. The aim of this study is evaluation of infectious organisms in females with a cytological diagnosis of ASCUS on married women came to Vali-e-asr Hospital.
Methods & Materials: This is a case-control study that 190 case report of ASCUS and 190 randomized controls (without epithelial cell abnormalities) examined cytological for presence of Trichomonas, Candida albicans, Gardenerella Vaginalis, Human Papilloma Virus, Herpes Simplex and non specific.
Results: Specific infectious organisms were Identified in (112) of the test and control cases. Cytological evidence of Trichomonas Vaginalis infection in case and control group was 14 (7/4%) and 5 (2/6%) respectively and difference was significant (p<0.03). Candida albicans in case and control group was 15 (7/9%) and 27 (14/2%) respectively that was significant (p<0.05). Frequency of Gardenerella Vaginalis in case and control groups was 17 (8/9%) and 27 (14/2%) respectively, that wasnʹt significant, Cytopathic effect of HPV was identified in 6 (3/2%) and 1 (0/5%) of the test cases that was significant in 5% confidence interval (p=0.056). Nonspecific infection in case and control group was 10 (5/3%) and 9 (4/7%) respectively, that wasnʹt significant. Herpes virus effect was not identified in the ASCUS cases and control cases.
Conclusion: with respect of results of this study ASCUS related to Trichmonoas significantly and it seems that relationship between Candida and ASCUS is reverse and This study indicates that Relation between Ascus and Human papillama virus is weak, too and further studies in order to evaluate etiopathogenesis of these infection in ASCUS is necessary.
